BEN WILLMORE: Advanced Adjustments in Camera Raw & Adobe Lightroom

Thursday, September 24th. 1:00pm – 3:00pm

Opening a raw file into Photoshop only utilizes a fraction of the information your camera captured. In order to achieve the highest quality possible, it’s essential to optimize a raw capture using Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) or Lightroom (LR) before opening it into Photoshop. Learn how to get the most out of your images by pushing beyond the basics when adjusting raw captures. Techniques will include:

• Learn which three adjustments are essential for all raw files that simply cannot be done in Photoshop.

• See which four sliders are responsible for causing halos around high contrast edges (like trees against a blue sky).
• Use specialized techniques that will transform images captured at sunrise and sunset.
• Understand why certain adjustments often work best when counterbalanced with another slider (by reducing one while increasing the other).
• Figure out why Split Toning, Post Crop Vignetting and HSL adjustments don’t always work as expected and discover how to get them to work again.
• Correct troublesome color casts that result from using multiple light sources that differ in color temperature.
• Figure out how to get ACR/LR to react to changes in camera settings that are ignored by default.
• Eliminate color fringing that the Chromatic Aberrations checkbox is incapable of fixing.
• Remove moire patterns in textiles.
• Utilize luminosity masks and hue masks to increase control over localized adjustments.
• Create custom default settings that will produce higher quality images before you start manually adjusting your images.
• Tour the sharpening and noise reduction panels to learn how to get the most out of every image and learn why the default settings are degrading the quality of your images.
• Develop your own custom set of presets to optimize your workflow and make counterbalanced adjustments more effective.
• Learn how to figure out if you’re pushing your adjustments too far and determine when you are damaging your images.
If we have time, we could also expand our ideas to include concepts that integrate Photoshop and Lightroom, including:
• Blend multiple develop settings to produce a result that would not be possible without combining ACR/LR and Photoshop.
• How to apply multiple rounds of Lightroom adjustments after round-tripping your images between LR and Photoshop all while retaining the ability to re-edit the layers that make up the file.
• Use multiple images from Lightroom in a Photoshop layout and have them automatically update when you change develop settings on the original images in Lightroom.

Warning: This class should NOT be attended by anyone who does not have basic knowledge of how to use Lightroom. That doesn’t mean what we do will be difficult, it just means the class is full of advanced ideas.
